TTP Specialist Centres Announcement
We are extremely proud to announce this achievement, this is years of work in the making.
On 1st September 2012, our daughter, sister, and friend, Anthonia Afelumo, passed away from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).
In our heartbreak, we established this charity in her name, The Anthonia Oyindamola Folakemi Afelumo Coshare Foundation (AOFAC).
We made it our mission to raise awareness of TTP so that people like her, people with this condition and their families, could get the treatment they need as quickly and effectively as possible.
One of our first-ever goals was to improve access to care.
When Anthonia was first diagnosed in 2008, there was only once specialist centre in the UK, that could provide her with care.
When Anthonia was first diagnosed in 2008, there was only once specialist centre in the UK, that could provide her with care.
Having only one specialist centre means that people unfortunate enough not live close by face life threatening delays to treatment, underappreciation of the severity of the condition and a misunderstanding of needs.
So, we set out to change this.
We canvased.
We lobbied.
We championed everyone and anyone who had a say…
…And this year, 10 years since Anthonia’s passing we did it.
On the 30th of November, we received confirmation from NHS England that there are now nine specialist centres able to treat TTP all over this country.
These centres are:
UCLH
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston
Oxford University Hospital
Cambridge University Hospitals
University Hospitals Birmingham
Nottingham University Hospitals and University Hospitals Leicester
Sheffield Teaching Hospital
Liverpool University Hospitals
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals
This is just the beginning…..
